What is poverty?

The United Nations defines poverty as the denial of choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity.

It means:

- the lack of basic capacity to participate effectively in society
- not having enough to feed and clothe a family, not having school or a  clinic to go to
- not having access to credit. It means insecurity, powerlessness and exclusion of individuals, households and communities. 
It means susceptibility to violence, and it often implies living in marginal or fragile environments, without access to clean water or sanitation. 

80% of humans around the world live on less than $10 a day, 50% of that is under $2.50. This statistic is increasingly higher in countries like the Philippines.
